Sanilac County area wrestlers Move On
Sanilac County wrestlers had a tough row to hoe in order to make it out of their respective individual districts. Local teams from Brown City, Marlette, and Sandusky travelled to New Lothrup where they would face competition from the host Hornets, fellow Division 4 powerhouse Montrose, along with others vying for the right to move on to the regional level. Cros-Lex needed to travel to Richmond for their Division 3 districts hosted by the three time defending state champions.
The Redskins, Raiders, and Green Devils each claimed one championship for the day.
Sandusky’s Pat Brown stood atop the medal stand for the 171 lb. weight class. Brown came into the meet with a 31-2 record and the number one seed. He promptly pinned his way into the finals where he met Ethan Barnette of Montrose. Barnette was recognized by a Michigan wrestling web site in its most recent state rankings, so the match promised to be a good one. In the final, Brown took control early and came away with a 10-6 victory and top honors for the afternoon.
Brown City Green Devil Dan Lindsay no doubt gives nightmares to many of his unlucky opponents. Lindsay came out of nowhere last season to earn All-State honors as a junior. He came into this district competition with a number one ranking on his chart as well as in the “Michigan Grappler” web site state rankings. He advanced to the championship match with quick pins against Cass City and Montrose foes, and the finals he met Owen Wilson of New Lothrup, who qualified for the state meet last season as a heavyweight. Lindsay swatted his Hornet opponent after 1:52 and moves on to Regionals with first.
Marlette’s Andy Bowman was also an All-State performer last season and has been recognized as an elite wrestler all season. The multi-sport standout came into Saturday with a 38-3 record and the number one seed at 119. Bowman breezed into the championship match with 3 quick pins. In the finals he met Johnny Robinson of New Lothrup who also came into the showdown with three first-period falls and recognition as one of the best wrestlers in the state. Bowman came away with an impressive 13-0 victory and another wall chart.
While Lindsay and Brown will be their team’s only regional qualifiers, Marlette will be sending four others to join Bowman next week. They are Mary Webster (3rd, 103), Nate Strauel (3rd, 140), Collin Henry (2nd, 145), and Tommy Ferguson (4th, 160).
Meanwhile, Cros-Lex was assigned to the Richmond district site. Pioneers that earned the right to continue their season included Garrett Seghi with a second place finish at 152 lbs. Branden Turner (112), Austin Woodruff (171), and Rober Wait (189)_claimed third place finishes and Khristian Burke was the fourth place finisher at 171.
Having been assigned to some of the toughest district sites in the state, Sanilac County grapplers had to beat the best in order to make it out. Good Luck to all county wrestlers who qualified for regionals next week. A top four finish there would mean a trip to the Palace of Auburn Hills for the MHSAA individual state championship tournament.
